Off to Story-Land!
Many years ago people had no books at all, and so the boys and girls could never read interesting stories such as you read today. But they knew many stories, even if they could not read them out of books. For in those days there were men who went from town to town, and from country to country, telling wonderful tales. These tales the people would tell over and over again to each other after the story-teller was gone.

This book is like one of the old storytellers, because its tales, too, come from everywhere. Some of them are stories that boys and girls have loved for many years, and perhaps you will find one or two that are your very best friends. Others are new stories, and we hope you will learn to love them, too.
And now you are ready to read the first tales in your book, which will take you from animal-town to kings’ castles.

A RIDE TO ANIMAL-TOWN
This story tells about an old rabbit who forgot something that everyone should remember. Find out what he forgot.
 
One morning Billy Beaver was riding to Animal-town. The day was very warm. So Johnny Fox, who was pulling the cart, walked along slowly.
After a while Billy saw a tired old rabbit resting by the side of the road.

这则故事讲述了一只年老的兔子，他忘记了每个人都应该记住的事情。找找看他忘了什么。
 
一天早上，海狸比利驾车去动物小镇。天很暖和，拉车的狐狸约翰尼慢悠悠地走着。
不一会儿，比利看到了一只疲惫的老兔子在路边休息。
 
“Are you going to Animal-town?” asked Billy Beaver. “If you are, you may hop in behind me.”
The old rabbit hopped in, but he did not say a word.
After Billy had gone a little way, Rabbit said something. He said it so very soft and low that Billy Beaver could not understand him.
“What did you say, Rabbit?” asked Billy.
“Oh, nothing.”
“Yes, you did. You said something.”
“Oh, I just said that your cart is hard to sit on.”
“Then put your coat under you,” said Billy Beaver.
So the tired old rabbit sat down on his coat.
 “你要去动物小镇吗？”海狸比利问，“如果是的话，那你就跳上来，坐在我后面。”
年老的兔子跳了上来，但他却一句话也没说。
比利走了一段路后，兔子咕哝了些什么。但他说得很轻，声音很低，海狸比利不知道他在说什么。
“你说什么，兔子？”比利问道。
“啊，没什么。”
“但你确实说了，你说了些话。”
“哦，我刚刚说你的车子坐着好硬啊。”
“那把你的大衣垫在下面吧。”海狸比利说。
于是，疲惫的老兔子坐在了自己的大衣上。
 
On and on walked Johnny Fox very slowly.  Just as he was going by a green pond, the rabbit said something again. He said it very soft and low.
“What did you say, Rabbit?” asked Billy.
“Oh, nothing.”
“Yes, you did. I heard you.”
“Oh, I just said that your fox walks very slowly.”
“He is doing the best he can,” said Billy Beaver. “The sun is hot.”
狐狸约翰尼继续慢慢地朝前走。经过一个绿色池塘的时候，兔子又说了些什么。他说得很轻，声音很低。
“你说什么，兔子？”比利问道。
“啊，没什么。”
“但你确实说了，我听到了。”
“哦，我说你的狐狸车夫走得太慢了。”
“他在尽力地走快，”海狸比利说，“太阳很毒的。”
 
“Oh,” said the rabbit.
On they went, until they came to some woods and a red barn. Then the tired old rabbit said something again.
“What did you say?” asked Billy Beaver.
“Oh, nothing.”
“Yes, you did, too. I heard you.”
“Well, I just said that I could not see what is in front of us. You are so wide.”
“I can’t help being wide,” said Billy Beaver. “Beavers are always wide.”
“Oh,” said the rabbit.
On they rode, past a yellow house and a big garden. After a while they came to a bumpy place in the road. Then the rabbit said something again.
“哦。”兔子应了一声。
他们继续走，一直走到了一片树林和一个红色谷仓前。这时，这只疲惫的老兔子又嘀咕了一句。
“你说什么？”海狸比利问道。
“啊，没什么。”
“但你确实说了，我听到了。”
“好吧，我只是说我看不到我们前方是什么，你的身板儿太宽了。”
“身体宽，我也没办法，海狸的身体都宽的。”海狸比利说。
“哦。”兔子回应。
他们继续前进，路过了一个黄屋子和一个大花园。不一会儿，他们走上了一段颠簸的道路。兔子又嘀咕了一句。
 
“What did you say this time, Rabbit?” asked Billy Beaver.
“Oh, nothing.”
“But I heard you say something! What did you say?”
“Well, I just said that the road is very bumpy here. It shakes me all around and bumps my tail.”
Then Billy Beaver called “Whoa!” He looked around at the old rabbit.
“You had better get out,” he said.
“Out!” said the rabbit. “Why?”
“If you don’t like to ride, you had better get out and walk.”
“But I do like to ride,” said the rabbit.
“这次你又说了什么，兔子？”海狸比利问道。
“啊，没什么。”
“但我听到你嘀咕了！你说什么了？”
“好吧，我只是说这里的路好颠簸，震得我七上八下，颠到我的尾巴了。”
海狸比利吆喝道：“停车！”他上下打量了一下这只年老兔子。
“你最好滚下车。”他说道。
“下车？”兔子说，“为什么？”。
“如果你不想坐车，你最好滚下去，自己走路。”
“但我想坐车。”兔子说。
 
“You keep saying things,” said Billy Beaver. “You keep saying things very soft and low. You said that the cart is hard to sit on. You said that the fox walks slowly. You said that you could not see what is in front of us. And now you say that the road is bumpy. Better get out, Rabbit. Better get out and walk.”
The tired old rabbit’s ears went wiggle, wiggle. He looked at Billy Beaver. Then he got out, but he did not say a word.
“Get up, there!” said Billy Beaver to the fox.
“你总是说这说那的，”海狸比利说，“你不停地嘀嘀咕咕。你说车坐着很硬，狐狸车夫走得慢，看不到我们前面的风景。现在又说路很颠簸。兔子，你最好滚下去，滚下去自己走。”
这只疲惫的老兔子耳朵摆了摆。他看了看海狸比利，然后下了车，但是一句话也没说。
“我们往那儿走。”海狸比利对狐狸说。
 
Away they went, and the rabbit began to walk down the hot, bumpy road. He walked just behind the cart.
After a while the tired old rabbit spoke to Billy Beaver.
“What did you say, Rabbit?” asked Billy.
“I said--let me get in and try again.”
“Whoa!” said Billy Beaver. He put one foot behind his ear and thought a little while. Then he said, “All right. I will let you try again. Get in.”
他们走了，兔子也开始在炙热而颠簸的路上走了起来。他就跟在车子后面。
不一会儿，这只疲惫的老兔子对海狸比利说话了。
“兔子，你说什么？”比利问道。
“我说，让我上车再坐一次。”
“停车！”海狸比利说道。他把一只脚搭在了耳朵后面，考虑了一会儿。然后他说：“好吧，再让你坐一次。上来吧。”
 
Rabbit got in, but at first he did not say anything. After a long time he said something very soft and low.
Billy Beaver turned around and looked at him.
“Now you are talking in a low voice again,” he said. “What did you say?”
“Oh, nothing.”
“WHAT DID YOU SAY? I heard you say something just now!”
“I said--hot sun, hard road, tired old bunny feet. Glad to ride.”
“Oh,” said Billy Beaver. “That is what you said, is it? Now say one thing more.”
“What?”
“I am not going to tell you. Think it over, Rabbit. Think it over,” said Billy.
“Oh,” said Rabbit. “All right. I will think it over.”
兔子上了车，一开始他一言不发。过了很长一段时间后，他又嘀咕起来了。
海狸比利转过身来，看着他。
“你又开始嘀咕了，”他说，“你说什么了？”
“哦，没什么。”
“你——说——了——什——么？我刚才听到你说了！”
“我说太阳真毒，路面真硬，老兔子的脚真累，坐车真好。”
“哦，”海狸比利说，“那是你刚才说的话，是吗？再说说其他的吧。”
“说什么呢？”
“我不会告诉你。兔子，你再想想，再想想。”比利说。
“哦，”兔子说，“好吧，我再想想。”
 
They rode on and on. And the tired old rabbit thought and thought. After a long time he said something very soft and low.
“What did you say, Rabbit?” asked Billy.
“Glad to ride,” said Rabbit. “THANK YOU.”
“That is polite,” said Billy Beaver. “Now I will say something. YOU ARE WELCOME, RABBIT.”
“Oh,” said Rabbit.
Then Billy Beaver and the tired old rabbit rode on to Animal-town.
他们继续坐着车走啊走，走啊走。疲惫的老兔子则想啊想，想啊想。过了很长一段时间，他又嘀咕了一句话。
“兔子，你刚才说了什么？”比利问。
“坐车真好，”兔子说，“谢谢你！”
“你真有礼貌，”海狸比利说，“现在我也要说点儿什么了。兔子，不用客气！”
“嗯！”兔子说。

TIPPY ELEPHANT’S HAT
In the story you have just read, an old rabbit learned a lesson. In this story a baby elephant learned that her very best joke was not funny at all.
 
TIPPY ELEPHANT’S TRICKS
Tippy was a gray baby elephant who lived in the circus with Mother Elephant.
“Why, oh why, do they call me Tippy?” asked the baby elephant one day.
小象提比的帽子
在你刚刚读过的那则故事中，年老的兔子学到了一课。而在这则故事中，一只小象知道了自己认为最有趣的玩笑根本毫无趣味。
 
小象提比的恶作剧
提比是只灰色的小象，跟她的象妈妈生活在马戏团里。
“为什么？为什么他们叫我提比？”有一天小象问道。
 
“Because you tip around so,” said her mother. “You put your front feet down so hard that you always tip up behind. And when you go down on your hind feet, you always tip up in front.”
“But I like tipping that way,” said Tippy Elephant, jumping around in the straw.
Now there was another thing that Tippy liked to do. It was to stamp hard with her right front foot.
Splash, splash, it would go as Tippy stepped into the water when her keeper brought her a drink. Smash, smash, it would go as she stamped on a wooden box. Bang, bang, it would go as she smashed a little boy’s balloon.
“因为你脊背总是前后一上一下的，”象妈妈说，“你把前脚压得低，后面便会翘起来。把你的后脚压得低，前面便会翘起来。”
“但我喜欢这样。”小象提比一边说，一边在稻草上来回地跳。
现在，提比又有另外一件喜欢做的事了，那便是用她的右前脚在地上重重地踩下去。
哗！哗！当动物饲养员领她去喝水的时候，她就狠狠地踏进水里。咚！咚！她重重地踩在木箱子上。砰！砰！她将小男孩的气球踩破。
 
“Oh, dear me,” said Mother Elephant. “I wish you would be a quiet baby elephant and play in the straw!”
“But it is more fun to play tricks with my foot,” said Tippy Elephant, and she looked around for something more to stamp on.
One day Tippy took a man’s straw hat off his head. Smash, smash, went the hat as Tippy Elephant’s heavy foot stamped down on it.
“噢，天啊！”象妈妈说，“我希望你是个安静的象宝宝，安安静静地在稻草上玩耍。”
“但是用脚玩些花样会更有意思。”小象提比说道。然后她环顾四周，看看还有没有什么东西可以踩踩。
一天，提比摘掉了一个人头上的草帽，接着一抬脚重重地踩了上去。咔，咔，草帽碎了。
 
“Oh, you are a naughty baby!” cried Mrs. Elephant, looking at the smashed hat.
Almost every day after that, when some
kind man gave Tippy Elephant a peanut or an apple, she would take off his hat with her trunk. Stamp, stamp--and it would be smashed flat by her frisky front foot. How Tippy would laugh!
“We shall have to sell that baby elephant if she does not stop being so frisky,” said her keeper one day.
“Did you hear that?” whispered Mrs. Elephant to her child. “You will have to stop smashing straw hats, or you cannot stay in this circus.”
“But it is fun being frisky with my foot!” cried Tippy again. Then one, two, three hats were smashed before the keeper could stop her.
“哎呀，你可真是个淘气的孩子！”象妈妈看着被踩烂的帽子叫道。
从那以后，几乎每天，当有人给小象提比花生或苹果时，她都会用象鼻子摘掉人家的帽子，然后重重地踩上去，一脚、两脚、三脚……直到帽子被她灵活的前脚踩平为止。提比踩完就笑得特别开心！
一天，提比的饲养员说：“如果那只小象还继续那样调皮的话，我们就不得不把她给卖了。”
“听到了吗？”象妈妈低声对自己的孩子说，“你不要再这样踩人家的草帽了，不然你就不能待在这家马戏团里了。”
“但是这样用脚踩很有趣啊！”提比嚷道。接着，又有一个、两个、三个帽子在饲养员阻止她之前被她踩烂了。
 
TIPPY GOES VISITING
One day Tippy had a happy thought. “If boys and girls come to see me, why can’t I go to visit them?” she said to herself. So she started off to make a call.
Down through the field went Tippy. Now and then she stopped to stamp her right front foot on a daisy. Once she stopped and smashed a tin can. Last of all, she tried to step on the tail of a cow that was lying under a tree.
“Moo, moo!” said the cow, jumping up and running away.
“She does not want to play with me,” thought Tippy, hurrying across the field. “I’ll look over this fence and see what I can find.” And she did.
提比去游玩
一天，提比有了个好玩的想法。“既然孩子们可以来看我，那为什么我不能去看他们呢？”她自言自语地说道。于是，她出发了，准备去回访一下他们。
提比首先穿过了田野。她时不时地停下来，用右前脚重重地踩在雏菊上。有一次，她停下来踩碎了一个锡罐。最后，她试图踩一只卧在树下的母牛的尾巴。
“哞！哞！”母牛叫着，跳起来跑了。
“她不想和我一起玩。”提比这样想着，然后匆匆地穿过了田野。“我来看看栅栏那边是什么，看我能找到什么。”
 
In the yard she saw a girl and boy playing in their sand pile.
“I’ll go in and visit them,” said Tippy to herself, and in through the gate she walked.
“Oh, look! look!” cried the girl, jumping up from the sand pile and running toward the house as fast as she could.
“Why, it’s a baby elephant coming to play with us,” said the boy. He ran toward the house, too, and stood beside his sister.
提比看到院子里一个男孩和女孩正在沙堆上玩耍。
“我要进去看看他们。”提比自言自语道。于是，她穿过了大门，走了进去。
“啊，快看！快看！”女孩一边叫着，一边从沙堆上跳了起来，飞快地跑向屋子。
“哎呀，这只小象要来跟我们一起玩呢。”男孩说。他也向屋子跑去，站在自己的妹妹旁边。
 
“I’ll make myself at home,” thought Tippy. Then what do you think she did? She put her frisky front foot down on some nice sand cakes that the children had made!
“Oh, please don’t smash our sand cakes,” called the girl.
But Tippy did not listen. Smash! Smash! She stepped on the tin sand pail.
“Oh!” said the boy. “There are some peanuts in the house. Perhaps if we give the elephant some of them, she will stop smashing things.”
The children ran into the house and brought out the peanuts.
“那我就像在自己家一样吧。”提比想。你猜她接下来做了什么，她调皮地将前脚踩在了这两个孩子用沙子做的精致蛋糕上。
“噢，不要踩坏我们的沙子蛋糕！”女孩叫道。
但提比不听。啪！啪！她又一脚踩在了装沙子的锡桶上。
“噢，屋里有些花生，”男孩说道，“可能我们给她些花生，她就不踩东西了。”
两个孩子跑进屋里，拿了些花生出来。
 
Tippy was a very polite elephant as she stepped up and took a peanut with her trunk. Each time she took one, she made a bow to the children.
“These are very nice children,” thought Tippy. “I think I will play with them.”
While she was eating the peanuts, she would reach out her frisky right front foot and smash a sand pie or step on the pail. Once she stamped right down on a poor little doll.
提比走上前，用鼻子拿了颗花生，她还是非常有礼貌的。她每拿一颗花生，都会向两个孩子鞠个躬。
“这些孩子真好，”提比想，“我想和他们一起玩。”
当她吃花生的时候，她还会调皮地伸出右前脚，一会儿踩坏了沙子做的馅饼，一会儿踏在桶上。有一回她正好重重地踏在了一只可怜的小玩偶上。
 
“Let’s give this elephant a present,” said the boy. “Then maybe she will forget about smashing things.”
“She may have my old straw hat,” said the girl. So she ran into the house and brought back a pretty hat with a red flower on one side of it.
Tippy Elephant put her head down while the girl tied the hat on.
“我们送这个小象一件礼物吧，”男孩说，“那样她也许就会忘记破坏东西了。”
“她或许能够戴上我的旧草帽。”女孩说。于是她跑进屋里，拿来一顶嵌有红花的漂亮帽子。
小象提比低下头，女孩给她戴上了帽子。
 
“Oh, she looks lovely,” said the girl, as Tippy bowed her head to show that she was thanking the children.
Tippy was so pleased with her hat that she started for home at once. “I can hardly wait to show Mother Elephant my beautiful hat,” thought the baby elephant as she went tipping back through the field to the circus.
“Oh, how sweet you look, Tippy dear,” said Mrs. Elephant, when she saw her child.
Tippy Elephant turned slowly around to show her mother how very pretty the hat was.
Two monkeys came hurrying up to look at it, and a giraffe put his head down to smell the red flower.
“啊，她看起来真可爱。”女孩说。提比低下了她的头，表示她对两个孩子的感谢。
提比很喜欢自己的帽子，她立刻往回走。“我真等不及向妈妈展示我漂亮的帽子了。”小象一边这样想着，一边深一脚浅一脚地穿过田野，往马戏团走。
看到自己的孩子时，象妈妈说道：“噢，亲爱的提比，你看起来真可爱！”
小象提比慢慢地转过身来，给妈妈看帽子有多么漂亮。
两只猴子匆匆地跑来看了看帽子，一只长颈鹿垂下了头闻了闻红花。
 
TIPPY LEARNS A LESSON
Soon Tippy’s keeper heard about the new hat and came to see it.
“What a nice baby elephant she would be,” he thought, “if she did not have that frisky foot.”
At that minute Tippy Elephant reached out her trunk, took the keeper’s straw hat from his head, and threw it down on the ground. And then-what do you think happened?
提比接受了教训
很快，饲养员听说了新帽子的事，他也过来想看看。
他想：“多可爱的小象啊，如果她不调皮，不用脚乱踩的话。”
就在那时，小象提比伸出了鼻子，摘掉了饲养员头上的草帽，把它扔到了地上。接下来，你猜发生了什么？
 
Just as Tippy Elephant raised her frisky foot, her own hat fell off. Smash! Smash! She came stamping down on the lovely hat with the red flower on it.
“Oh, my beautiful hat is smashed!” cried Tippy.
The elephant keeper, the giraffe, the monkeys, and Mrs. Elephant all looked sadly at the poor smashed hat and felt sorry for Tippy.
“It is too bad,” said Mrs. Elephant. “But, Tippy, I do hope this will teach you a lesson.  Now you know how people feel when you stamp on their hats.”
“Yes, Mother,” said Tippy, with tears in her eyes, as she looked at her hat on the ground. “I’ll never do any more smashing. Never!”
就在小象提比调皮地抬起脚的时候，她自己的帽子掉了下来。咔！咔！她踩到那顶嵌有红花的漂亮帽子上了。
“呜！我漂亮的帽子被踩坏了。”提比哭着说。
大象饲养员、长颈鹿、猴子们和象妈妈看到踩坏的帽子都很伤心，都为提比感到惋惜。
“这太糟糕了。”象妈妈说，“但是提比，我希望这能给你一个教训。现在你知道你踩别人帽子的时候他们的感受了吧。”
“是的，妈妈，”提比看着地上自己的帽子，含着眼泪说，“我再也不会踩东西了，再也不会了！”
 
And now all the circus animals and the elephant keeper love Tippy. All the people who come to the circus are very fond of her. Tippy is still a frisky little elephant, but she never smashes pails or tin cans or hats.
 
1. There are three parts to this story. They are named “Tippy Learns a Lesson,” “Tippy Goes Visiting,” and “Tippy Elephant’s Tricks.” Which part comes first? Which part comes second? Which part comes last?
