The Land of Strange Happenings
Would you like to visit Fairyland? Yes? Then the first thing you must do is to find out how to get there. You cannot go on a train or a street-car. You can never walk or ride to Fairyland. But if you take your book, open it at “Fairy Tales,” and begin to read, soon you will be in that wonderful land.
You will see lovely fairies and strange little brownies. You can watch them do their magic tricks and hear them laugh and sing. What wise little people they are! They know just what to do to make boys and girls everywhere happy and good.
奇异的大陆
你想去仙境遨游一番吗？想去？你首先要做的就是找到去那儿的方法。乘坐火车或者有轨电车是去不了那儿的。你也不能步行或者骑马进入仙境。但是，如果你拿起你的书，翻到“童话”这一部分，然后开始阅读，你立刻就到了那个神奇的地方。
你会看到可爱的小仙女和奇异的小棕仙（传说中夜间帮助做家务的小精灵。——译者注）。你可以看到他们施魔法，听到他们的笑声和歌声。他们可真是一群聪明的小家伙啊！他们知道做些什么才能让各地的男孩和女孩更加快乐、善良！
 
So let us take a trip to Fairyland. Sit back in your seat with your feet on the floor. Rest your book on your desk. It is a long way to Fairyland, but if you are comfortable you will not get tired. All aboard! Off we go to Fairyland!
那么，让我们驶向仙境吧。坐回自己的座位，双脚放在地上，把你的书放在桌子上。到仙境有很长一段路要走，但如果你感到舒服的话，就不会疲惫。大家一起来吧！让我们向仙境出发！
 
THE MAGIC COTTAGE
Fairies have strange ways of teaching children. Find out what Irene learned in the magic cottage, where tables and dishes talked and hopped about!
 
THE FAIRY HOUSE
“Oh, what a pretty house!” said Irene, as she stood with her fairy godmother outside the cottage.
魔法小屋
精灵们有着许多奇怪的方法来教育小孩子。在文中找找看，看看艾琳在魔法小屋里学到了什么。那里连桌子和餐具都会说话、跳跃。
仙屋
艾琳和仙女教母站在一座农舍外面，艾琳感叹道：“啊，好漂亮的一座房子！”
 
 “Do you think it is pretty, Irene? I am glad of that, for it is here that you are going to stay.”
“That will be lovely! Am I to be all alone?”
“Yes,” answered the fairy. “I am going to leave you here to take care of the house. Come inside, and I will tell you what you must do each day.”
Taking Irene into a pleasant little bedroom, the fairy said to her, “Every morning you must open the windows wide to let in the air. Then you must make the bed and dust the room well.
“This is the parlor,” said the fairy, opening a door. “Every day you must clean the floor and dust the table and chairs. And this is the kitchen,” she said, as she took Irene into another room.
“艾琳，你觉得它很漂亮吗？这让我很高兴，因为你要住在这儿。”
“太好了！就我一个人吗？”
“没错！”仙女回答说，“我要把你留在这儿照看这间房子。进来吧，让我来给你说说每天你必须要做的事。”
仙女带着艾琳进入一间舒适的小卧室，然后对她说：“每天早上，你必须打开窗户通风，接着你要收拾好床，将房间打扫干净。”
仙女打开了一扇门，说道：“这是客厅，你必须每天打扫地面，擦拭桌子和椅子。这是厨房。”她一边说一边带着艾琳进入另一间屋子。
 
As the fairy left, she said to the little girl:
“Be up with the sun, and get your workdone;
 Keep the stove bright and the fire alight.
Here are the brushes, here are the brooms;
Here are the dusters for dusting the rooms.”
Irene ran from parlor to bedroom and from bedroom to kitchen. “Oh! it is lovely!” she cried, in great joy, as she looked abouther. But suddenly she heard a voice call out, “Now, then, little mistress, if you do not give me some wood at once, I shall go out.”
仙女离开的时候对小女孩说：
“日出则起，完成工作；
“炉子要亮，火焰要旺。
“这是刷子，那是扫帚；
“还有掸子，清洁屋子。”
艾琳从客厅跑到卧室，又从卧室跑到厨房。“噢！太棒了！”她看着四周，十分高兴地说道。但这个时候，她突然听到一个声音：“好吧，小主人。如果你现在不给我加些木柴，我就要灭了。”
 
Irene almost jumped out of her shoes. It was the fire talking! Too much surprised to speak, the little girl just stood and listened.
“Very well, then,” cried the voice, again; “if you will not take care of me, I shall go out.” At once the fire went out.
艾琳吓得几乎要跳了起来。是火焰在说话！小姑娘惊讶得一句话也说不出来了，就只是站在那儿，听火焰继续说。
“很好！很好！”这个声音又响了起来，“如果你不照顾我，我就灭了算了。”说完，火立刻熄灭了。
 
Irene went to the wood-box and opened it. Taking some small sticks, she hurried to the stove.
“Here, mistress, come back and put down my cover, please, ” called out another voice.
“Now the wood-box is talking,” thought Irene.
Just then a stick of wood said, “You let me fall, mistress. Kindly pick me up.”
Irene did as she was told. She closed the wood box, picked up the wood, and swept the floor. Then she laid the broom upon the table and started to build the fire. But the broom called out, “Hang me up, mistress!  Hang me up!”
“I can’t do everything at once,” said Irene, crossly, as she hung up the broom.
艾琳走到木箱子旁边，打开它，拿出了一些小木棍，匆匆忙忙地跑到炉子边。
“这里，小主人。先回来，帮忙把箱盖合上。”另一个声音在说话。
“现在一定是木箱子在说话。”艾琳想。
就在这时，一根木棍开始说话了：“小主人，你把我弄掉了。小心地把我捡起来吧。”
艾琳按照指示做了起来。她先是盖上了储木盒，捡起了木棍，打扫了地板。接着，她把扫帚放在桌子上，准备开始生火。但这时，扫帚说话了：“小主人，把我挂起来！把我挂起来！”
“我总不能一下子做完所有事情啊。”艾琳一边气冲冲地说一边把扫帚挂了起来。
 
 “One thing at a time, mistress, one thing ata time,” answered the broom.
Soon the fire was burning brightly again. SoIrene went to a drawer and got a tablecloth. Then she started to set the table for dinner.
“Mistress, shut me!” called out the drawer.
“Oh, bother!” cried Irene, as she slammed the drawer in so hard that she knocked down a cup.
“Mistress, hang me up!” cried the cup.
“小主人，一样一样来，一样一样来。”扫帚回答说。
很快，火又烧得旺了起来。于是，艾琳走到一个抽屉旁，拿出了一张桌布。接着便开始为晚饭摆桌子。
“小主人，关上！”抽屉喊道。
“噢，真讨厌！”艾琳大声叫道。她砰的一声使劲儿关上了抽屉，却震掉了一个茶杯。
“小主人，把我挂起来！”茶杯喊道。
 
“好吧，待在那儿，安静点儿。”艾琳回答道。
“非常好，小主人！”茶杯说。
“这样就好多了，”艾琳想，“只要他们能够安静下来，我就有时间做自己的事情了。”
她在橱柜里找到了一个小馅饼、白面包、黄油、熟草莓和甜奶油。可以肯定，她的晚餐一定吃得很开心。
吃完饭后，艾琳把碟子堆到了一起。她想：“我可以慢慢地来洗他们。”但她刚一转身，碟子们便叫了起来：“小主人，小主人，洗我们吧！请洗我们吧！”
“等一会儿，就等一会儿。”艾琳说。
“好的，小主人。”碟子们回答说。
“Oh, stay there and be quiet,” Irene answered.
“Very well, mistress,” said the cup.
“That is better,” thought Irene. “If they will only be quiet, I can do things when I have time.”
In the cupboard she found a little pie, white bread and butter, ripe strawberries and sweet cream. You may be sure she liked her dinner.
After Irene had finished eating, she piled up the dishes. “I can wash them by and by,” she thought. But as she turned away, the dishes cried, “Mistress, mistress, wash us! Please wash us!”
“In a minute,” said Irene. “Just wait a minute.”
“Very well, mistress,” answered the dishes.
 
Irene lay down to take a nap. How pleasant it was, lying there! Not a sound was to be heard except the tick of the clock, as it said:
“The minutes fly, one by one,
Tick, tick!
Lazy, lazy, nothing done,
Tick, tick!”
艾琳伏下来，打了个盹儿。趴着多快活啊！除了时钟的嘀嗒声，什么声音也听不到。正在这时，时钟说道：
“时间流逝，分分秒秒，
“嘀嗒，嘀嗒！
“懒惰，懒惰，什么事也做不成，
“嘀嗒，嘀嗒！”
 
THE FAIRY RETURNS
When evening came, the whole house looked very different from the way it had looked when the little girl first came into it. Everything seemed to be out of place. The floor was not swept, and the dishes were not washed.
Suddenly Irene saw her fairy godmother standing before her. “How is this?” asked the fairy in a stern voice, as she looked all around the room.
“I left things so that I could do them all at once,” answered Irene, very much ashamed.
“Left them to do all at once! You can do only one thing at a time, whenever you begin. Didn’t the things ask to be done?”
“We did, we did!” they all shouted together; “but she told us to be quiet.”
仙女回来了
夜幕降临了，整个屋子看起来和小姑娘最初进来的时候大不一样。一切都乱糟糟的。地没扫，碟子也没洗。
突然，艾琳看到仙女教母站在了她的面前。“这是怎么回事？”仙女看了看屋子周围，非常生气地问道。
“我想把事情放在一起，这样我可以把它们一次性做完。”艾琳很惭愧地回答道。
“放在一起做！无论什么时候开始做事，你一次都只能做一件事。难道他们没要求你做事吗？”
“我们要求了，要求了！”他们一起嚷道，“但是她让我们安静。”
 
 “So you want to do all the things at once,  lazy girl? Then have your wish.” When the fairy spoke these words, she disappeared.
Suddenly shouts came from all sides. “Hang me up!” “Put me away!” “Wash me!” “Dust me!”
The poor little girl did not know which way to turn. The broom beat her, the cups flew at her head, and the table and chairs pushed against her.
“既然你那么想一下子完成所有的事情，懒姑娘，那么就如你所愿吧。”仙女说完了这些话就消失了。
突然，四周传来了一片喊叫声：“把我挂起来！”“把我收起来！”“把我洗干净！”“把我扫干净！”
可怜的小姑娘完全不知道应该先去做哪个好。扫帚打她，杯子朝着她的脑袋飞过来，桌子和椅子一个劲儿挤她。
 
At last, when the broom gave Irene a very hard blow, she caught it and hung it up. The broom said, in a pleased voice, “Thank you, mistress.”
Irene saw that she must put each thing where it belonged. A dust cloth was slapping her in the face. Taking it in her hands, she dusted the table. Then she folded the cloth and put it away.
“Thank you, mistress,” said the duster and the table. So two more things were taken care of.
Now Irene set to work very hard, and, as each task was finished, she heard the words, “Thank you, mistress.” She kept on until the house was as clean as it had been when she came into it.
“Oh, dear!” said Irene. “I don’t want another evening like this as long as I live.”
最后，扫帚狠狠地打了艾琳一下，她一把抓住扫帚，把它挂了起来。扫帚高兴地说：“谢谢你，小主人！”
艾琳觉得她必须把每样东西都物归原处。一块抹布“啪”的一声飞到了她的脸上。她一把抓住它，用它擦了擦桌子。接着，她把抹布叠好，收了起来。
“谢谢你，小主人。”抹布和桌子说道。这样，又有两件事情干完了。
现在，艾琳开始勤奋地劳动。当每一样工作完成以后，她都会听到这样的话：“谢谢你，小主人。”就这样，她一个劲儿地工作着，直到屋子变得和她刚走进来时一样干净才停下来。
“噢，天哪！”艾琳说，“只要我还在这里住上一个晚上，我再也不想要像今天这样了。”
 
 “Then don’t have one, Irene!” ticked the clock. “Do each piece of work as it comes, and then you won’t have so much trouble.”
The next morning the warm sunlight came in through an open window and woke Irene.
“Oh,” she said to herself, in a lazy voice, “I think I will sleep just another half-hour.”
“那么就不要这样了，艾琳。”时钟嘀嗒着说道，“有一点点活儿就把它干完，你就不会有那么多麻烦了。”
第二天早上，温暖的阳光透过一扇打开的窗户照了进来，也叫醒了艾琳。
她懒懒地跟自己说：“噢！我想再睡半个小时。”
 
 “Tick-tock, tick-tock, mistress, get up!” sang the clock from downstairs.
Then Irene remembered all that had happened the day before. “I don’t want another day like that,” she said to herself.
So she jumped out of bed and dressed herself. After that she opened the windows wide and threw back the bedclothes. Then she went downstairs and set to work. When the fairy godmother came back, the cottage was as clean as could be.
“Ah!” cried the fairy, “this is the way it should be. How have you done it, Irene?”
“Oh, dear godmother, I did just one thing at a time,” answered the happy little girl.
“叮叮叮，叮叮叮，小主人，快起床！”楼下的钟声响了。
这时，艾琳想起了昨天发生的事儿。“我可不想再过那样的一天了。”她自言自语道。
于是她跳下床，穿好衣服。然后她打开窗户，再把床单叠起来。接着，她下楼开始工作。当仙女教母回来的时候，屋子干净得不能再干净了。
“啊！”仙女叫道，“这才是屋子该有的样儿！你是怎么做到的，艾琳？”
“噢，亲爱的教母，我只是一次做一件事情。”小女孩高兴地回答道。
 
 “And so you have found time to do all the tasks,” answered her godmother. “You have learned one lesson, Irene. When you have learned a few more lessons, I shall send you home. For I need my cottage so that I may teach other little girls not to be lazy. Now hold up your hand.”
Irene did as she was told, and her godmother placed a strange-looking ring upon her finger. “Every time you are lazy, this ring will prick you,” said the fairy. “When you have not been pricked once for a whole week, I shall know that you are no longer a lazy girl.”
“而且你找到时间来完成所有的任务了。”她的教母回答说，“你又学到了一课，艾琳。你再学几课，我就会把你送回家啦。因为我还需要我的小屋教会其他小姑娘不偷懒。现在伸出你的手。”
艾琳照教母说的伸出了手，教母在她的手指上戴了一个看起来奇怪的戒指。“无论何时，只要你偷懒，这个戒指就会扎你。”仙女说，“如果你一个星期都没有被扎到，那我就知道你不再是个懒姑娘了。”
 
You must not think that Irene found it easy to learn her lesson. Many times the wonderful ring pricked her finger, but she had made up her mind to try very hard not to be lazy.
One day Irene sat at her window, thinking. It was her birthday, and, for the first time, a week had gone by in which the ring had not pricked her once. Suddenly the fairy stood before Irene.
“Oh, godmother,” cried the happy little girl, “have you come to give me a birthday party?”
“Yes. That is the very reason I have come, Irene,” replied the fairy. “You have learned your lesson well, and you may go home after your party. Now tell me, are you not much happier than you used to be when you were so lazy?”
不要认为艾琳学到这一课很容易。这个神奇的戒指扎痛了她的手指好多次，但是艾琳下定决心，努力不要再懒惰了。
一天，艾琳坐在窗前，思索着。那天是她的生日，而且是她第一次在一周的时间内，一次也没有被戒指扎到。突然仙女出现在了她的面前。
“噢，教母，你是来给我举办生日派对的吗？”小女孩高兴地叫道。
“是的，艾琳，这正是我过来的原因。”仙女回答说，“你学得很好，派对结束后你就可以回家了。现在告诉我，你是不是比以前懒惰的时候更加幸福了？”
 
 “Oh, yes, dear godmother!” answered Irene. “And thank you for teaching me how much more fun it is to be busy. Here is your ring, which you may now lend to some other little girl who is lazy.”
